Pitchfork Review

here it is, in all its glory.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/42962-through-the-belly-of-the-sea

everyone knows a bad pitchfork review is a good thing!

besides, we only scored a few tenths of a point below the new wilco record.

Morningbell
Through the Belly of the Sea
[Orange Records; 2007]
Rating: 4.4

It’s a maxim among many who think about such things that no new technologies are ever really “new,” but are hybrids and re-conceptions of pre-existing modes of doing similar things. For its part, the record album, despite the second term’s indication of a collection of disparate works, has never shaken its association with the narrative format, where songs are chapters and musicians storytellers. As actual works of literary art, concept albums tend to approach the idea of “story” rather loosely, a function of the obvious fact that songs have nothing on words as tale-creators. Perhaps then, the Gainesville power-pop band Morningbell is on to something with Through the Belly of the Sea, which they’ve styled after that most nonlinear of the fictional arts, the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books.

Even aside from the music, then, Belly sits at a rarified, if not necessarily sought-after, level of indie rock ironic nostalgia, by combining the classic rock-ness of the concept album with the dime-store novelty of the Bantam book series. The trick to the album is simple, and seems like a fun idea; you read the liner notes while listening, and after each track you are given two choices as to your next move. Relax on the coral reef? Fight the mysterious sea monster? The world is yours. For a lot of people, shuffling music around is a daily activity, so Belly’s batshitness is of a much lesser conceptual realization than that of, say, Zaireeka. But in a way, this is the most compelling aspect of Morningbell’s gimmick; its regressive approach toward listening technology, limiting iTunes’ infinite-choice power to but two post-song options. Along that line, perhaps a good idea to market the CDs might be a slogan like one from the back of a comic book: “Magically Transform iTunes Into a Paperback!”

The record as either music or narrative, however, does little more than tread water. The tale told is of some sort of vague oceanic exploration, and it becomes quickly clear that the songs, for the most part, have little to do with adventure or science fiction. Reading the half-paragraphs that carry the story forward takes about 15 seconds each, after which the waiting game starts for something exciting to happen in the song, which invariably does not. Opening track “The Speed of God” is impassive keyboard pop-as-expedition-launch, which leads to, without option, to a brief interlude on track seven. I read during this song that a JOLT!!! happens as my ship is attacked by a sea monster, but the music– which aims for The Life Aquatic but lands somewhere in a Krofft Brothers interstitial– is indifferent. I decide to “flee,” and end up “Lost Again”, before opting to watch an octopus walk across some coral, both excursions set to slight mid-tempo indie pop.

I’ll stop short of recommending a Rick Wakeman or Jethro Tull degree of nutty orchestration for an album with this set-up, but Morningbell’s anonymous, aqueous Shinsiness is much too thin for the fantastic voyage they seem to have in mind. That Belly could be listened to in its published running order without any huge change in effect is a testament to either the universality of its lyrics (hope, fear, going home, etc.), or the more likely explanation that the Choose Your Own Adventure idea is, well, a rather thorough publicity gimmick. Morningbell’s real breakthrough with Belly, then, instead of any adventurous narrative novelty, is its unique way to gain notice for otherwise timid music.

New Video!

Monday, May 21st, 2007
Thanks to our resident creative wizard, Shaun Spalding, and a hard working staff of loyal devotees, we bring you this video for Faster than Eagles. It took over 3 hours to shoot and god knows how much longer to edit, but here it is in all its glory.

Turn the brightness on your screed all the way up before watching it.

Also, here’s the alternate take

"Fucking nerd"

Friday, May 18th, 2007
Tonight was our second dance at the Florida Music Festival. In case you didn’t know, the fest is held in Orlando. Now, if Las Vegas is the city of sin, Orlando is the city that has no soul.

Don’t get me wrong, we have plenty of friends who live in/are from Orlando and they are good people, and the people who put the festival on do a really good job and are really good to work with, but Orlando is just hollow.

And here’s my proof. We were walking down Pine (the street the venue was on) and some girl sitting outside of one of the bars bumped me in the leg with her cigarette when I walked by. I didn’t know what she hit me with, so I looked at my pants and then at her as I continued to walk by. As I did this, she said to me “FUCKING NERD.” I wanted to say something back to her, but she was with two large upper bodies. Orlando proliferates with large upper bodies in dress shirts. The weather must be suitable for their caloric intake or something.

“Nerd.” I do believe I was clearly older than she was, which makes this all the more outrageous. I don’t think I’ve been called a nerd since 4th grade.

Despite this overly warm welcome, the show was good and we played well.

Next stop…East coast tour.

Hey, we need a drummer!

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007
As many of you know, Jake is leaving this summer and we need to find a new drummer ASAP.

email me @ morningbellonline[at]gmail.com if you’re interested.

minimum criteria are
1. we need a 90% committment. WE don’t want to preclude you from playing oustide music, but we need this to be your primary band.
2. you need to be planning on living in Gainesville for at least the next academic year and hopefully a little longer than that.

other criteria will be emailed to any serious inquiries.

thanks!

Matt and Kim!!!

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

We went to CG’s tonight to check out Matt and Kim (an indie band from Brooklyn).  I saw their video online and on MTV.  It was kinda cutesy boy/girl keyboard drum indie pop combo.

Live, however, was another story.  Kim (the drummer) f’in wailed!  It was a really good show.  They brought such an intense amount of energy to the stage that you couldn’t not enjoy them.

Makes you realize how much attitude counts for.

You'll have to come back later, the state is on fire.

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

So, if you’re still in Gainesville, you’re well aware of the 16,000 Acre brush fire in northeast Alachua/Bradford County.  There is smoke everywhere.  Pieces of ash are falling from the sky.  One of our friends had charred leaves falling on her yard.

Then, I read a headline on yahoo saying that the Pentagon is calling 35,000 more troops to Iraq.  This is just f’ing great, isn’t it?  The emperor’s war burns on.  Which made me think.  Imagine if the fires were from bombs; not just another country’s bombs dropping on you, but your own country’s wack job fanatic’s bombs too.  Imagine if it smelled like this every day.

I heard on NPR yesterday about how so few poor Americans get dental care.  So what, you think, their teeth are dirty.  Evidently it can be worse than that. The piece highlighted one case where a 12 year old boy died b/c his tooth decay spread to his brain.

This happened in America.

It happened because the government doesn’t fund Medicaid enough to provide basic dental care to its own poor children.

Yet, billions upon billions upon billions of dollars are being wasted turning some other country into a charred landscape, just like mother nature is doing to us right now. And she’s not even charging anything.

2006/07 Academic Year Wrapup Current mood: spent

Sunday, May 6th, 2007
This academic year was clearly the best year yet for Morningbell. Let’s review some of the highlights

-Back to school show sells out the Atlantic!
-Taking Tampa by Storm
-Grow Radio Benefit with Hollowpaw (near capacity crowd @ CG’s)
-Talking Heads Halloween show
-Georgia part Deux
-Thanksgiving Pageant with Inuit Jargon
-The O’Dome show
-The 3rd CD release and 2nd sellout show of the year!

and many more.

This was indeed a good year. We met many new faces, saw old friends leave town, and kept close to other friends who stuck around.

We’ve seen the advent of Morningbell 4.0 with Jake on drums and anticipate 5.0 with Jake’s soon-coming departure.

We’ve always said we’ll continue on as a band as long as we are better than we were six months ago and I feel this guideline has held up for us over the last year.

We’ve still got a few more goodies coming before we begin the hunt for a new drummer, and what will invariably be a new angle on the band.

This is going to be a big year to live up to, but I think we can do it if you do.

Have a great summer if you’re leaving town, and if you’re staying, don’t be shy, let’s hang out! It’s going to be a quiet one.

saluta!

Morningbell & Umoja @ The Atlantic 5/5!!

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Hey everyone,

Come celebrate graduation weekend and Cinco de Mayo this Saturday at the Atlantic.  Morningbell is playing with The Umoja Orchestra and everyone is gonna have a splendid time!  It’s only 5 bucks!!! (the flyers say 8, but it’s really 5).  Morningbell plays 2nd, (11:15).

Travis just graduated and completed his masters degree and we’re ready to celebrate crazy drunken Mexican Style.  Cinco de Mayo, as we all know, is the date that the Mexicans sunk a British ship carrying copious amounts of Mayonaise.  It’s gonna be a hoot!

We’ll be bringing the Christmas lights and playing some old tunes and lots of new tunes.

Hope to see you all this Saturday!

Sincerely,
The Morningbell Robot

So, I brewed my own beer.

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

Tortoise Stout or Travis’ Graduation Stout as I’ve come to call it is my first batch of home brewed beer ever.   It’s an oatmeal stout, and I have to say I’m proud of it.  It’s pretty delish.

I was worried that it would suck, but suck it does not.

So, you’ve got a few days to make friends with me in order to taste this bounty.
